D Office Architects has created the new Lundby School on Hisingen for the City of Gothenburg. The school accommodates 630 students in grades 7–9, along with pupils in compulsory education for those with intellectual disabilities. It also includes a cultural school and a sports hall, allowing the building to function as an active community hub well into the evening. The design centers on safety, warmth, and an environment where students can flourish both during and beyond the school day.
The exterior draws inspiration from the site and the former school, which has been partially preserved, using red brick and traditional materials to preserve a sense of continuity. At the same time, the architecture expresses a contemporary identity, meeting modern educational needs. Generous glass sections give the school an open character, highlighting its activities and strengthening its connection to the neighborhood.
At the entrance, students and visitors arrive in a bright central foyer with the canteen and media library on either side, offering long sightlines that create an inviting atmosphere. This space forms the social core of the building, complete with a café and generous seating. The upper floors provide additional lounge areas where students can relax and connect between lessons.
Inside, natural materials such as slate and wood pair with a restrained palette in darker tones, shaping a calm, harmonious environment where students can feel at home.
Gustafs contributed to the project with Linear Ribs, perforated acoustic panels, and plain wooden panels in white-pigmented birch veneer. On the upper floors, Linear Ribs foiled in a deep blue colour add contrast and texture.
