The General Services Administration (GSA) is an independent agency of the United States government, established in 1949 to support and manage the essential operations of federal agencies. It provides a wide range of services, including supplying products and communication systems, as well as offering transportation, office space, and building management services for government offices.
The U.S. General Services Administration Building, located in Washington, D.C., serves as the agency’s headquarters and is recognized as a historic office building. Designed by Charles Butler in the neoclassical style, it was constructed between 1915 and 1917. In 1935, the structure was modified with the addition of a seventh floor. The building was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
As part of a major modernization initiative, the building has been comprehensively restored and upgraded to meet the demands of 21st-century use. The project encompassed a nine-story renovation along with a curtain wall infill expansion. The updated design features open-plan office spaces alongside a range of amenities, including a child development center, auditorium, cafeteria, conference center, and fitness facility. The project is targeting LEED Gold certification.
As part of the renovation, Gustafs Linear Ribs in various widths and colours were installed on the walls of the fifth floor, enhancing the acoustic environment within the open office landscape.
