The atrium, called the Biosphere, at the Technical University of Denmark is a stunning piece of woodwork in the heart of the University. Just the sight of this stunning room calms the mind with its warm wood and beautiful light. Gustafs was privileged to produce and supply 50,000 linear metres of wood panels for this unique project, as well as coordinating the installation with our Danish partner, In-Sign. The building is used by three different faculties at the University, as a common building for administration, meetings and events.
The stunning interior has attracted a lot of attention over the years and in 2017 it won the Danish Carpenter of the Year Award. A prize awarded to a project with a focus on wood as a material.
In 2018, the project was awarded the Detail Inside Special Prize, a prestigious architectural prize awarded every two years to innovative projects.
In February 2025, architects Rørbæk og Møller and Christensen & Co. were awarded Gold, the highest recognition, in the ‘Excellent Architecture’ category at the German Design Award 2025 for the DTU Life Science & Bioengineering project. It’s one of the world’s most prestigious design awards, organised by the German Design Council for over 70 years. Only 12 projects were awarded Gold in the architecture category globally, placing the building among the most visionary architectural projects in the world.
