After being housed in Borås City Hall for over fifty years, Borås District Court moved into newly built premises in 2025. The move was long awaited, as the 115-year-old city hall had long imposed limitations on operations, not least due to extensive acoustic problems.
With the keywords dignified, welcoming, and robust, ON Arkitekter has designed a simple but elegant building using materials such as brick, stone, and wood. The new district court is a modern and sustainable building of approximately 5,100 square meters, spread over five floors. The building meets high standards of security and accessibility and houses thirteen courtrooms, three of which are secure courtrooms – something that did not previously exist in Borås. The design of the courtrooms allows for separate entrances for spectators, detainees, and the court.
Climate and environmental considerations have been a consistent theme throughout the project; 2,700 square meters of recycled brick has been used for the facade cladding, the building has presence-controlled lighting and demand-controlled ventilation, and the roof has solar panels and sedum that contribute to stormwater retention. The building is certified according to BREEAM Outstanding and has been awarded the BREEAM Building of the Year award at the Sweden Green Building Awards.
In the waiting areas and corridors outside the courtrooms, the walls have been clad with Gustafs Linear Rib and plain wooden panels in ash veneer, which contribute to both the acoustic performance and the desired atmosphere.
