The Gheorghe Dima National Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, founded in 1919 and named after composer and educator Gheorghe Dima (1847–1925), is a prestigious center of higher artistic education. With departments ranging from composition and conducting to musicology, pedagogy, canto, and opera, the Academy combines tradition, performance, and innovation.
It has introduced national firsts such as the music doctorate in 1968, the Doctor Honoris Causa title in 1991, and distance learning in 2000. Today it offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral programs, supports interdisciplinary artistic research, and promotes lifelong learning.
Its new 27,000 m² campus, inaugurated in September 2025, provides state-of-the-art facilities for education and performance.
The new 1,031-seat Héritage Hall is the heart of the Academy’s campus and the largest concert venue built in Romania since 1989. Fully funded by the Romanian state, it represents the country’s strongest post-communist investment in cultural and educational infrastructure.
Designed by architect Cristian Mihăescu, the oval hall features wooden finishes by Gustafs, a pinewood stage, and a suspended ceiling with ten curved waves, creating a space that meets the highest international standards, offering outstanding acoustics with a 1.55-second reverberation time.
Hosting students, guest artists, and the Cluj-Napoca Philharmonic Orchestra, it serves as a multifunctional space for concerts, opera, and ballet. Set to host the ICMA Gala in 2027, the Héritage Hall stands as a symbol of Romania’s cultural ambition and modern artistic excellence.
Two additional 239-seat amphitheatres complement the hall and also feature Gustafs wall panels.
The Héritage Hall features a sophisticated array of Gustafs products, including plain wooden panels, perforated acoustic panels, and linear ribs.
The wall panels are finished in Gemini Cherry veneer, while the coffin-like balconies and the curved ceiling are clad in Gemini Birch veneer. The Linear Ribs are mainly in Gemini Cherry, accented with Gemini Birch and Gemini Wenge, creating striking patterns on the walls. These high-quality materials contribute both to the hall’s visual elegance and its exceptional acoustic performance.
The two smaller amphitheatres are also finished with Gustafs panels, one in Gemini Cherry veneer and the other in Gemini Birch veneer.
