The old district court in Norrköping served the judicial system for fifty years, but had become outdated in every respect: security, functionality, space, and technology. So the new district court – like many of Norrköping’s institutional buildings strategically located along one of the city’s three promenades (in this case, the northern one) – is a welcome addition.
The building is characterized by generous amounts of natural light and round, smooth shapes reminiscent of the undulating waters of Motala Ström, the river that flows through the city, creating an open and inviting atmosphere.
Enhanced security and modern technology have been prioritized in the 5,000-square-meter, four-storey new building, and to meet the strict energy consumption goals, the building has been equipped with a sedum roof and solar cells, among other things. These sustainable choices make the building both environmentally friendly and energy efficient, and it is certified according to BREEAM Excellent.
Inside the entrance, there is a two-story waiting area for the public, with large glass sections offering views of the adjacent, preserved trees, while the exterior concrete pilasters provide visual privacy.
In the waiting areas and corridors outside the ten courtrooms, the walls have been clad with Gustafs Lamellow+ Linear in ash veneer, and around the entrances to the courtrooms, our plain panels have been installed in ash veneer stained in a green shade.
Norrköping District Court was one of three finalists in the Community Properties category of Årets Bygge 2025 (Building of the Year 2025), awarded by the trade magazine Byggindustrin.
