The crematorium has been located at the Eastern Cemetery in Kristianstad since 1942. Wear and tear and stricter environmental requirements sparked discussions about renovating it as early as the 1990s, and an investment of SEK 100 million was approved in 2021.
In the spring of 2023, the new crematorium was put into operation – a state-of-the-art facility considered to be the best in the Nordic region, with six-metre-high ceilings, an improved working environment in terms of ventilation and equipment, and double the capacity. The new premises also house a visiting room where relatives can say their final goodbyes.
The architects focused on creating a functional working environment, but also a bright, beautiful and respectful place, worthy of its purpose.
In addition to the chalk-white, plastered walls and the ‘Tree of Life’ artwork in perforated sheet metal, the ceiling also adds character to the furnace room. Backlit Gustafs panels in oak with a custom-made perforation pattern cover the entire ceiling, creating the room’s very own starry sky.
In 2024, the building was awarded the Architecture Prize of the Year by Kristianstad City Council, with the following motivation:
‘The new crematory at the Eastern Cemetery is an addition that, with great respect and care, provides space for life’s final journey. This is achieved without compromising on adaptation to the location, the existing chapel, functionality, and technology.
Above all, the furnace room demonstrates this respect and care. The room is created by a conscious treatment of daylight, in proportions and shapes, in materials and colours, and not least the ovens as two dark stone pillars and a room-high tree silhouette on the north wall. A tree of life, a memento of the transience of life or a beautiful leaf pattern – it is up to the visitor to decide.’
