Veksthuset (The Greenhouse) is the largest of three buildings that make up Urtekvartalet (The Herb Quarter) in Oslo, a new quarter located between Grønland, the city centre and Grünerløkka. The new quarter will connect these areas by creating a vibrant new urban space in Grønland and contribute to the development of the area with a focus on inclusion and social sustainability.
Whilst Fabrikken and Drivhuset, the two other projects in Urtekvartalet, are renovations, Veksthuset is a new 24,000 m² office building with seven floors plus a roof terrace. There are also two underground floors with meeting rooms, technical rooms, a fitness room and parking spaces for both cars and bicycles. The entrance floor features a reception area, lounge, coffee bar, restaurant, and several outward-facing commercial spaces. The building was constructed for Sweco, which has moved its Norwegian headquarters to Veksthuset and leases most of the office space for its 800 employees.
With its unique design, Veksthuset is a landmark that strengthens the identity of the area, which has been acknowledged with a nomination for ‘Building of the Year 2024’ in Norway.
The interior consists of a simplistic but well-composed combination of materials that unites the principles of nature with modern innovation. Gustafs wood panels – plain and perforated (Nano & PD8) – cover the ceiling and contribute significantly to the building’s appearance. We have also custom-made ventilation grilles in solid wood that are seamlessly integrated into the panel ceiling.
The panel ceiling is divided into different sections framed by the building’s concrete pillars, and the combination of generous ceiling height, the warmth of the oak veneered panels and the framing creates a grand and inviting atmosphere, while also dividing the spacious lobby into more intimate zones.
Veksthuset is environmentally certified according to BREEAM Excellent and has energy class A.
