Studio Ulster, newly opened in Belfast, is a state-of-the-art virtual production facility within a wider film-studio complex at Belfast Harbour. The £72 million project is a collaboration between Ulster University and the Belfast Harbour Commission.
Spanning more than 75,000 square metres, the centre includes multiple virtual production stages, a dedicated motion-capture stage, post-production suites, and a screening room.
RPP Architects were commissioned to design the building, and their vision for the screening room – an important component at the heart of the studio – centred on it feeling “warm, cosy, intimate and comfortable.”
To achieve the required acoustics and create the desired atmosphere, they clad the room’s walls with custom-made dimensional panels in walnut veneer from Gustafs, incorporating both plain and nano-perforated surfaces.
Gareth Andrews from RPP Architects met up with us at the studio and spoke about their ideas and the material selection for the screening room, and the help they got from our UK supplier LSA Projects in rationalising the design concept.
