Södra Skogsägarna, or just Södra, is Sweden’s largest forest owners’ association, with more than 50,000 forest owners as members. Södra is also an international forest industry group with around 3,000 employees worldwide. The company produces wood products, pulp for paper and textiles, building systems, bioproducts, and electricity. Södra is a world-leading producer of pulp and also operates one of Europe’s largest sawmill businesses.
The company’s headquarters – located in Växjö, Sweden, built in 1969 and originally designed by Réza Hortay – has recently undergone extensive renovation. Semrén & Månsson’s vision of a cohesive overall impression that reflects Södra’s identity was chosen for the office’s transformation.
A sustainability analysis formed the basis for the preservation of materials and more efficient use of the property. The design concept draws inspiration from the elements of the forest and uses Södra’s own reusable materials. Through activated surfaces, the head office has become a flexible and future-proof workplace.
The entrance area, with reception, elevators, and a large spiral staircase, as well as a coffee bar, shop, and exhibition area, is centrally located in the “waist” of the Y-shaped building. Acoustic panels from Gustafs have been installed throughout the entire 300 sqm hexagonal ceiling. Three different perforations have been used, and all panels are in white pigmented ash veneer.
