The Skou Building, named after Nobel laureate Jens Christian Skou, is Aarhus University’s newest research facility, and houses the Department of Biomedicine. By bringing all research units together under one roof, the building provides researchers, students, and staff from around the world with modern, flexible spaces designed to support collaboration and innovation.
Its design also carries forward the architectural heritage of Aarhus University. The original campus, created in the 1940s by architects C. F. Møller and Kay Fisker, established the university’s distinctive minimalist style – an identity that continues to influence newer additions such as the Skou Building.
Designed by Cubo Architects, the building combines architectural heritage with contemporary design, emphasising simplicity, natural light, and a strong connection to its surroundings. The interior features a carefully selected palette of materials that creates a calm and cohesive atmosphere.
In the foyer and hallways, Gustafs & JJI supplied plain wooden panels and nano-perforated acoustic panels in oak veneer as wall cladding. In the large atrium, artist Henriette Heise has decorated the walls with intarsia inlays in smoked oak, creating a striking contrast with the panels.
