WOOD & GLASS

“House of Sweden” is the name of the Swedish Embassy in Washington, D.C. The modern, exciting and open building is designed by Gert Wingårdh and Tomas Hansen and stands on the bank of the Potomac – and truly symbolizes scandinavian architecture. Gert Wingårdh explains his thinking as he wanted to do something Swedish. He wanted some connection to the northern parallels with their scarlet dawns and sunsets. The building contains of not only the embassy proper, but also meeting and exhibition halls as well as apartments intended for Swedish business people.

MAPLE & BESPOKE PERFORATION

Throughout the building you find bright maple veneered wood panels. The total area amounts to 2,450 square meters. The challenge was to combine demands for fireproofing, sound control and environmental soundness with aesthetic charm. In the ceiling panels forming the entrance level “cloud of light”, a newly designed acoustic perforation for ceilings was developed combined with light from above. Holes were cut and covered by white cloth. A total of seven different patterns in conjunction create the special, shimmering light in this area.
