Qatar Convention and Conference Center was conceived and designed by Arata Isozaki in association with RHWL architects to be the largest and most adaptable meeting place in the gulf region. An exciting and functional meeting place offering 10 performance areas including a 2500 seat theatre and a 4 000 seat conference hall, building standards were to be exceptional and unsurpassed. From the exterior, with its symbolic Sidra tree structure supporting the complex´s massive roof to the multi-functional room interiors highlighting fittings and decorations which allude to both modern and traditional Qatari culture the center was to meet every possible modern technological and ecological demand.
Today, situated in Doha´s expansive Education City area the QNCC has already fulfilled the expectations of its owners, Qatar Foundation in achieving LEED Gold status. In 2009 Gustafs was commissioned to manufacture and install over 12 000 m2 of the wooden interior cladding. Ranging from acoustical adjusted cherry, maple and macorré paneling through solid oak wood ribbing to the most challenging 3D-maple veneered wall, the factory at Gustafs produced all that was asked of it, and that was only the beginning.
The long haul from Gustafs in Dalarna to the desert edges of Doha was carried out with precision and care by a steady stream of trucks that covered the 4000 km journey across Europe through Syria, and Saudi Arabia to their final destination at the QNCC building site in Doha. Baytur Insaat Haahhut A.S., a major Turkish construction company, was the main contractor and Gustafs customer. Throughout the projects duration the partners developed close professional and personal relationships helping to solve the many challenges and problems which are part of any major project. Skills in project leadership, technical innovation and not least carpentry know-how helped Gustafs project group meet the demands of a modern building project far from home. November 2011 saw the initial opening of the QNCC and roughly one year later it was to host the UN’s Climate Change Conference during two weeks with 10 000 delegates from over 200 countries.
Future conference participants and visitor alike can appreciate the comfort and functional amenities thought the impressive center. The Qatar Convention and Conference Center financed by Qatar Foundation is yet another architectural achievement which chose Gustafs products for their quality, reliability and classic appearance. Gustafs employees, together with a multi-cultural local installation team and its supervisors from Gustafs in Dalarna, achieved what is set out to do.
The Gustafs team recalls the challenges and joys of successfully achieving the vision of the Emir of Qatar for the Qatar National Convention Centre: a three-dimensional acoustic wall “that takes the breath out of our visitors!”
