Underpinned by our Scandinavian design heritage, we bring you regular stories about architecture and interiors, exploring natural materials, acoustics, and the creation of safe and harmonious environments.
With the launch of its new collections and acoustic innovations, Figura+ and Feltfon, Gustafs is inviting architects to use its products as a springboard for their own creativity. To find out more, we caught up with Creative Director Jessika Borgs Nordin, one of the designers behind the new ranges.
“Feltfon Curves, Intersections and Layers products draw inspiration from the Feltfon Linear range,” says Jessika. “When we introduced felt more prominently into our material palette in 2023, we saw the immense potential in the material and an incredible opportunity to create new shapes and to further experiment. Felt offers great potential as it’s so flexible, and it fits well into our product offering because it’s also environmentally sound and has excellent acoustic properties. There’s lots of synergy with Gustafs’ environmentally friendly and flexible acoustic design philosophy.”
” The entire company is characterised by a passion for creation, and we constantly strive for innovation, which is fundamental to our design philosophy. We designed these collections to serve as starting points for other designers, and with the launch of the Feltfon products, our in-house team has created building blocks and shapes that architects can freely combine to craft their own patterns and expressions,” Jessika adds.
Complementing the linear Feltfon range, Feltfon allows for the creation of eye-catching curves and diagonal patterns that contrast with the vertical ribs of Feltfon. A range of colour options increases the scope for originality.
Going a step further, Vector Layers lets architects create one-of-a-kind designs. The collection is inspired by the patterns in natural wood grain and there is an option to include wood inlays between the customisable felt ribs. “Creating curves with wood can be challenging, so the incorporation of felt facilitates flowing forms while maintaining the connection to wood,” says Jessika.
“Architects can put their personal stamp on the different Feltfon options to create original wall art.”
In Figura+, all three of Gustafs’ signature materials — felt, wood, and fibre gypsum — are celebrated. These statement acoustic panels showcasing felt-backed organic forms, can be paired with the Lamellow+ collection to create impact.
The move to make the fibre gypsum core a design feature in Figura+ was intentional, as Jessika explains: “Usually the gypsum core isn’t visible in our products, despite it being a vital material thanks to its acoustic and fire-safety properties. By giving the fiber gypsum core a prominent role in Figura+ , we wanted to celebrate its advantages. It serves as a reminder of how crucial this material is for our panel performance. So, in honour of our 110th anniversary, we felt it was time to give fibre gypsum a more prominent role,” Jessika explains.
“Figura+ offers our full palette of veneers and felt, as well as two shades of gypsum core. The organic shapes reflect our love for working with natural materials, and all the various designs are inspired by nature and our surroundings.”
Jessika hopes that the collections will help to foster new design approaches. “I would love for Feltfon and Figura+ to ignite more creative partnerships between the Gustafs team and architects,” she says. “Working closely with our customers is an exciting way to unlock the potential of the materials we use.”
