Intarsia decorative panels for wall & ceiling
Marquetry inlays on big size wood panels
Intarsia / marquetry inlays is a remarkable technique for creating decorative elements in interiors. With our experience and modern technology, it’s now easier than ever to craft stunning signature walls and ceilings with intarsia. The design can seamlessly flow across multiple panels, making the artwork a timeless part of the building.
What is intarsia?
Intarsia is the art of creating patterns and images by fitting together different timber species or veneers. The technique has been used for centuries to give wooden surfaces a distinctive and refined character. Today, intarsia is used in architecture and interiors to create decorative walls, artistic installations and unique spaces where design, craftsmanship and modern technology meet.

Intarsia Reimagined
The artwork is created in vector format and then precisely cut using our high-precision digital cutter. The designer selects the artwork, veneer types, and the direction of the wood grain.
The pieces are carefully assembled and adhered to the panel. The intarsia artwork panel is crafted with the same finishing treatments as our other wood panels. This is an all-natural product, combining high-quality timber veneer with a non-combustible, high-density fibre gypsum core. Gustafs panels feature over-veneered edges for seamless joints. Available in custom sizes up to 3000mm in length and 1200mm in width, the panels are installed using Gustafs’ beloved, easy-to-use Capax System, ensuring zero-spaced joints and perfectly aligned patterns.

When art becomes part of the architecture
At the intensive care unit at Falun University Hospital, artist Emma Löfström transformed the walls into a continuous artwork in wood. Drawing on natural forms, vegetation and organic structures, she created a motif that spans large surfaces and follows the architecture through the building.
The work is built on the classic intarsia technique, in which different veneers are fitted together to form a larger motif. By combining traditional craftsmanship with digital precision, thousands of individual veneer pieces were cut, assembled and joined into finished panels. The result is an artwork in which the wood’s natural colour shifts, grain and fibre direction all contribute to the life and depth of the motif.
The project shows how intarsia can be used far beyond furniture and smaller details. With Gustafs panel technology, artworks can be integrated directly into walls and ceilings while still meeting the highest demands for durability, fire safety and function. This makes it possible to bring art, architecture and craftsmanship together in a single surface.
